Treat this like a PCS with better food. Lock status, housing, and cash runway before you romanticize Shibuya crossings.
Study, work, or family—your visa path and housing search start from that answer.
School (COE) or employer. Do not buy a one-way ticket on a tourist stamp and “figure it out.”
Share houses and international-friendly agents are the usual first door. See rent below—schools with realtor partners shorten the hunt.
Base-adjacent towns, Facebook groups, and veteran meetups beat landing cold.
Immigration and benefits rules change. Confirm with the Embassy of Japan, your school/employer, and VA before you commit.

Immigration
Short and blunt—enough to know which door you are walking through.

Company or school as sponsor. Teaching, IT, engineering, and hospitality are common foreigner pipelines—your degree and contract matter.
Family status and long-term routes have their own work-permission rules. Do not assume “I live here” equals “I can enroll or work freely.”
Work
English helps. Japanese opens doors. Status permission is non-negotiable.
Housing
Tokyo is expensive. Base towns can be easier. Foreigner-friendly options save months of rejection letters.
Food & drink
A short list of confirmed (or strongly reported) veteran-owned spots. Hours and ownership change—call or message before you go.
Yokosuka — veteran-owned New Orleans / Cajun and smoked BBQ, craft beer on tap. Long-running Navy-town fixture near Yokosuka-Chuo.

Stripes Japan is useful for new openings. Treat “military discount” claims as unverified until you see them in writing.
Geography
Most U.S. veterans in Japan cluster near installations—even after ETS. Pick a region for vibe, cost, and how far you are from Tokyo or the beach.
Classic Navy hub on Tokyo Bay. Dobuita Street, English menus, and VFW 1054 energy. Easy JR + Keikyu into Yokohama/Tokyo for jobs and school.
West Tokyo / Kanagawa triangle. Commuter life, denser Japanese daily routine, strong VFW / USO footprint. Good if you want city jobs without living in Shinjuku prices.
Remote dual-service base town in Aomori. Quieter, colder winters, tight retiree network via the RAO. USO is outreach-only—plan social life through base groups and town Facebook.
MCAS on the Seto Inland Sea (Yamaguchi). Smaller footprint than Okinawa; USO + NMCRS on base. Miyajima / Hiroshima day trips are the civilian bonus.
CFA Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture—Fleet Landing + Nimitz Park USO. Compact port town; after ETS lean on CFAS Facebook groups more than Tokyo-style meetups.
Largest U.S. footprint: Kadena, Foster, Hansen, Futenma area towns. Legion Post 28 + VFW 9723 social life; Gate Street / Chatan food scene. Car culture beats trains.
Gate access is status-dependent. Retirees and civilian veterans usually need sponsorship or stay off-base—confirm before you plan a “quick PX run.”
Community
Posts, canteens, and retiree offices are where Japan’s veteran community actually meets. Facebook is the chat layer—Discord is thin.
Okinawa — canteen open to visitors (membership not required to hang out). Near Camp Foster / Ginowan.

Public Discord servers for Japan veterans are scarce. Gate access, canteen hours, and guest policies change—confirm on the post’s Facebook page before you show up.
Perks
Japan is not CONUS MWR. Know which card opens which door.
Yokosuka’s 自衛隊割 (JSDF discount) is for Japanese Self-Defense Forces—not U.S. veterans. Always verify access with the installation and the business. Rules differ by base, contractor status, and guest sponsorship.
